Literacy Blog #3 6/20/17
One of my past reading habits was
that I had was a narrow reader. Narrow reading is when you reading one word at
a time. At that point of time, I felt like I could only read one word at a
time. My brain and eyes were not processing the information fast enough for me
to read it with fluency. So, it took me a long time before it started to make
progressions on reading with fluency. I still struggle sometimes with some
words, but I am way better than I was when I was younger. What I do now is use
my finger as a pointer. This helps my eyes get to seeing multiple words
quicker. I have to read during the daytime and in a quiet place. I the type of
person that every little thing will grab my attention. So, if its people in the
background or music being played my whole focus would be on the other stuff,
not the book that I am trying to read. It also must be in the daytime because
I'm an early bird. When I get sleepy I'm going to call it a night no matter
what I am trying to work on or do. So, mid-day perfect for me to read a book. I
think I read more now than I did when I was a kid. Having to read textbooks,
playbooks, and special reading assignments for homework is more than I did when
I was a kid. Reading books was not a common thing in my household, and truly I
think that why I struggled reading when I was younger. The thing is if I would
have started out reading like I do now my fluency would have been much better
at a younger age.
